The Department of Environmental Engineering was established for the purpose of producing leading scientists and technicians who can contribute to the solution of environmental pollution using scientific methods. In the Department, students are learning the basic designs of various environmental facilities, including water sewage, solid and industrial waste treatment, and air pollution control facilities, so that they will be able to understand and operate such environmental facilities. Additionally, this Department is working to develop the methodologies of physicochemical and biological management to treat various environmental pollutants efficiently.

History

The Department was established in 1992 with the inception of an engineering college, and through the years has produced many environmental engineers who have made significant contributions not only to the environmental infrastructure nationally, but at the international level as well. The Department is committed to preparing engineers to excel in whichever path they may choose, be it in research, construction, management or education. Emphasis is placed on enabling students to realize their full potential, and also on instilling pride in studying a science that has "paved the road" to civilization for all of humanity through the ages. As a forerunner in the environmental engineering field, it is the responsibility of this Department to continue to bring forth engineers of the highest caliber who will lead the way in this rapidly advancing science. These graduates will follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and continue to contribute to all of mankind through preserving harmony between man and his environment.

Objective/Scope

Environmental researchers deal with interactions between human beings and their environment, to guard each from the harmful effects of the other. This broad scope provides graduate students with unique opportunities to specialize in areas best suited for their background and research interests. The objectives of the graduate program in environmental science and engineering are to educate students for highly competent environmental engineers and scientists, and to research pollution abatement technologies. The program is interdisciplinary so that qualified students from engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science and other appropriate disciplines may apply.

Undergraduate/Graduate Program

The environmental engineering program covers the supplying water and wastewater treatment, air pollution, solid and hazardous waste management, land and geological pollution protection, environmental hydrology and water resource engineering, environmental fluid mechanics and earth's environmental system. Environmental engineers and scientists are involved in resource development, allocation of use, and management of resources to achieve and maintain the qualities required for designated uses.
